An Open Letter

I write to register my strong opposition to the so-called “Big, Beautiful Bill,” and in particular to Section [ X ]—the language purporting to grant former President Donald J. Trump permanent immunity from “any judicial interaction” for conduct undertaken before, during, or after his term in office. No American—president or private citizen—is above the law Our republic is founded on the principle that the law binds all of us equally. A statutory shield that places one individual beyond the reach of civil or criminal accountability would shatter that cornerstone and invite abuses of power by future office-holders across the political spectrum. Constitutional separation of powers Article III vests judicial power in the courts, not in Congress, and certainly not in legislation crafted to pre-judge a single person’s liability. Carving out an exemption for one former president upends the carefully balanced checks and balances the Framers designed to prevent tyranny. Precedent for impunity If Congress can immunize one president after the fact, it can immunize any future president from any wrongdoing—from corruption to violations of civil liberties. History shows that democratic institutions wither when leaders enjoy personal impunity. Public confidence and the rule of law As a voter, taxpayer, and small-business owner, I know that predictable, impartial enforcement of the rules is what allows commerce—and democracy—to thrive. Granting judicial immunity to a former president erodes confidence in the courts and Congress alike, undermining both domestic stability and America’s standing abroad. For these reasons, I respectfully urge you to: Vote “No” on the Big, Beautiful Bill in its current form; Strip any provision that grants blanket civil or criminal immunity to past, present, or future presidents; and Reaffirm Congress’s commitment to equal justice by advancing bipartisan reforms that strengthen—rather than weaken—oversight and accountability. I appreciate your service and your consideration of my concerns. Please let me know how you intend to vote on this legislation. Respectfully,
