Override the Gov’s veto of the E-bike bill. E-BIKE SAFETY VETOED: An e-bike safety bill that received nearly unanimous support in Florida’s Legislature has been axed by Gov. Ron DeSantis (https://jaxtoday.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9f07e48069862b5bef898136a&id=651c4dc20f&e=00d7a56932). The bill would have set a 10 mph speed limit for cyclists on shared-use paths and created a system to track e-bike crashes statewide. It would have also formed a task force that could use that crash data to recommend other changes to enhance safety. A number of kids have been seriously injured in e-bike crashes in St. Johns County, and Sheriff Rob Hardwick worked closely with lawmakers to write the bill. “When you have blood on your hands from kids getting hurt, it’s time to act,” he said. But DeSantis called the bill an “overreach” and said it would “likely lead to enhanced surveillance by local governments.” The governor’s veto may not be the end of the road for the bill. Lawmakers could override his veto if two-thirds of the members of each chamber agree.
