I am writing, in horror, to demand that you publicly condemn any discussion of the U.S. leaving NATO. That treaty is indispensable for our national security. I am sure Russia and China would be absolutely thrilled for us to leave it.
President Trump has expressed deep dissatisfaction with NATO’s refusal to give military aid in the U.S./Israel war against Iran that resulted in the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz (and, side note, the closure was completely predictable… but I suppose it’s hard to make decent military strategy plans when you’ve fired the actual experts and ignored the rest).
Imagine I am a young adult renting a home with a couple of roommates. We share a kitchen. One day, I decide to bake cookies because I think my Baptist church is going to plan a bake sale if the Methodist church plans one. While making the cookies, I create a disaster in the kitchen: butter coating the inside of the microwave, flour over everything, brown sugar ground in every crevice, every single dish dirty, and burned dough on the oven’s heating element. No one can use the kitchen now because of the shape it’s in. I am shocked at the mess and demand that my roommates assist me in cleaning up the mess. They decline and point out that I made the mess, unprompted, for something that wasn’t even definite. They are unhappy because they also cannot use our communal kitchen. I fly into a rage and threaten to break my lease and move out because I feel that a true roommate would help.
Do you hear how ridiculous that sounds?
Please, please stop uncritically supporting the President’s unjust and illegal war against Iran.
