An Open Letter

To: Sen. Grassley

From: A verified voter in Ames, IA

July 29

Your letter on migrant children is built on distortions and outright lies. It uses the suffering of children as a political weapon instead of addressing the truth. You claim “countless migrant children were exploited and lost under the Biden administration.” That is a deliberate falsehood. The numbers you and others cite come from routine follow-up failures such as missed phone calls and incomplete case files, not confirmed trafficking or disappearance. Federal audits show that these tracking issues existed for years, including under the Trump administration. You intentionally omit that fact to make it seem like a crisis created solely by President Biden. That is lying to your constituents. You accuse Health and Human Services of instructing contractors to ignore your inquiries. That is another baseless claim. There is no verifiable evidence that HHS issued such an order. If you have proof, release it. If not, you are making accusations without evidence because the allegation itself serves your narrative. That is reckless and undermines legitimate oversight. You also ignore the fact that the federal inspector general’s report on unaccompanied children covers both the Trump and Biden administrations. These failures did not begin in 2021—they have been baked into the system for years. Under Trump, thousands of children were separated from their parents with no plan to reunite them. Under Biden, the system was flooded with unprecedented numbers of minors, exposing the same broken infrastructure. Pretending this is exclusively a Biden-created problem is dishonest. You use words like “countless exploited children” to paint a picture of systemic trafficking enabled by the federal government. That language is propaganda. There are real, documented cases where vetting failed and children ended up in dangerous situations, including some tied to criminal organizations. But you twist those tragedies into a sweeping partisan attack while ignoring the root causes: underfunded systems, lack of staff, and failures to fix processes over multiple administrations—including yours. You also hold up the PRINTS Act as if fingerprinting minors is the solution. Fingerprinting already exists for many sponsors; the problem is not lack of technology, it is lack of resources to vet, monitor, and follow up on every placement. Your bill does nothing to address that. Your letter isn’t about protecting children. It is about using fear to score political points. If you truly cared about their safety, you would be pushing for increased staffing to vet sponsors, mandatory welfare checks on every child after placement, and resources for state and local agencies to track and protect these kids. Instead, you repeat partisan lies and exaggerations to make headlines. Senator Grassley, stop weaponizing these tragedies. Stop lying to the public. The children you claim to fight for deserve truth, accountability, and action—not propaganda.
