It is unconscionable that the U.S. House of Representatives is considering allowing the Treasury Department to unilaterally strip nonprofit, charitable o rganizations - 501(c)3 organizations - of their tax-exempt status. rt terrorist activity. H.R. 9495 would allow Treasury personnel to take away nonprofit status from organizations, using the excuse that the organization might in some way suppo As someone who grew up in New York City, I take terrorism very seriously. democracy to allow government employees so much unilateral power. As a former nonprofit employee and a current small business owner, I take government overreach very seriously as well - and it is never a good idea in a You cannot avoid fundamental due process if a nonprofit actually has ties to terrorist groups. In such a case, there already exist other recourse for gov ernment and other entities. I am afraid that, in a future time, if this bill were to become law, any nonprofit whose work undermines the status quo could potentially lose their char itable status, even without actual ties to terrorism. Government actions need to have explanations, public explanations. This bill doesn't even allow that.
