I am writing to express my deep concern and outrage regarding the recent oil deal involving Venezuelan oil seized by the United States military, as reported by Semafor on January 14, 2026. My primary concern is the fundamental illegality and unconstitutionality of this arrangement. As Senator Elizabeth Warren stated, "There is no basis in law for a president to set up an offshore account that he controls so that he can sell assets seized by the American military." This is a matter of domestic law and constitutional authority. I am outraged that the President has established an offshore account in Qatar to hold $500 million in proceeds from selling seized assets. There is absolutely no legitimate reason for these funds to be held outside the United States. This arrangement deliberately circumvents congressional oversight and removes these funds from the normal appropriations process that the Constitution mandates. Furthermore, I am deeply troubled by the military seizure of this oil in the first place. The United States military should not be in the business of seizing foreign assets to sell for profit. This action sets a dangerous precedent and raises serious questions about the limits of executive power and military authority. By placing these funds in an offshore account that the President controls, this administration has created a slush fund beyond congressional reach. This violates the separation of powers and threatens the fundamental principle that Congress controls the federal purse strings. - I am calling on you to take immediate action: - Demand a comprehensive federal investigation into the legal authority under which this oil was seized and sold, and the establishment of this offshore account. - Hold public hearings to examine whether the President has violated federal law and constitutional provisions regarding appropriations and congressional oversight. Consider articles of impeachment if this investigation confirms that the President has acted without legal authority and circumvented constitutional checks and balances. I urge you to act immediately to investigate and hold this administration accountable.
