Halt Elon Musk's unconstitutional seizure of government power

To: Rep. Vargas

From: A constituent in San Diego, CA

February 14, 2025

The actions of Elon Musk and his employees represent an unconstitutional overreach of power that undermines the authority of Congress and threatens the foundation of our democratic system. Musk, as an unelected billionaire, has illegally seized control over key government functions like the Office of Personnel Management and the Treasury Department's payment systems. This flagrant violation of the separation of powers concentrates immense power in the hands of a private citizen without any accountability or oversight. This coup jeopardizes the livelihoods and privacy of millions of federal workers whose sensitive personal data is now exposed. It enables Musk to potentially withhold or divert trillions of dollars in government funds, circumventing Congressional oversight and crippling vital public services like Social Security, Medicare, and tax refunds. Such a precedent, if allowed to stand, would irreparably erode our system of checks and balances. Decisive action is imperative to halt this unconstitutional power grab and reaffirm the preeminence of democratically elected officials over the whims of the wealthy elite. Legal challenges and public pressure must be brought to bear to force Musk to relinquish control of government agencies and systems. Failure to do so would submit the operations of the entire federal government to the dictates of an unaccountable oligarch, rendering Congressional authority obsolete. This crisis imperils the very core of American democracy and the constitutional order.
