The United States Postal Service (USPS) is a vital institution that has served the American people for over 250 years, operating as a self-sustaining entity funded through the sale of its products and services. It is crucial to protect the independence and integrity of the USPS, as it delivers mail to every household and business across the country without relying on taxpayer dollars. Recent reports suggest the president is preparing an executive order to remove the Postal Board of Governors and transfer the USPS under the authority of the Department of Commerce. This would constitute an unlawful and hostile takeover of the Postal Service. The law explicitly states that the Postal Board of Governors, appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate, holds the sole authority to hire or remove the Postmaster General. Congress intentionally designed the USPS to operate independently, free from political interference. The USPS is a crucial part of the $1.2 trillion mailing industry that employs approximately 7.5 million people. It employs more than 545,000 people, including over 70,000 veterans, and is at the heart of our nation's economic infrastructure. Undermining the USPS would result in increased costs for consumers, diminished service, particularly in rural areas, and the potential loss of stable, union-protected employment for countless Americans. Any changes to the Postal Service's governance structure must prioritize its mission of delivering for the public, safeguarding its workforce, and maintaining its independence from political influence. We urge you to oppose any attempts to alter the USPS's governance structure through executive action and instead work to protect this vital institution and the essential services it provides to the American people.
