The U.S. Cannot Violate CAT to Appease the President
To: Justices Court
From: A verified voter in Lompoc, CA
June 10
The President’s request that this Court allow the government to deport people to countries where they may be tortured—without meaningful notice or the chance to raise a claim—is a disgraceful attempt to sidestep the Constitution and our international obligations.
No president has the authority to undo basic human rights. The Convention Against Torture, which the U.S. ratified, does not make exceptions for political convenience or executive preferences. Attempting to send people into harm’s way based on vague diplomatic assurances is not only reckless—it’s immoral and unlawful.
This Court must reject the administration’s attempt to gut the legal protections that stand between vulnerable individuals and the risk of brutal treatment abroad. The rule of law demands more than blind trust in executive power. The Constitution demands more than silence in the face of cruelty.
I urge you to deny this request. The Court must not become a rubber stamp for executive overreach!
