Support S.1272 (Grassley Bill) to Reassert Congressional Authority on Tariffs

I strongly support initiatives for Congress to take back its constitutional authority to define, shape, and lead America's trade policies. Chuck Grassley's bill, S.1272, is a fantastic example of this- it will allow Congress to reassert its constitutional duty to impose tariffs on foreign nations. This legislation is sorely needed at this moment in time to restore checks and balances in trade policy and avoid disastrous outcomes for the U.S. economy. As the Constitution makes clear, Congress is responsible for regulating foreign commerce. Unfortunately, Congress has, over time, delegated that responsibility to the executive branch. The current political climate now requires Congress to reinsert itself in the process. S.1272 will require the President to notify Congress within 48 hours of imposing or increasing tariffs, limiting the duration of tariffs to 60 days unless Congress approves an extension, and affirming Congress's power to terminate any tariff. Given the potential risks to the U.S. economy, including those recently observed in the bond markets, having more "eyes" and decision-makers involved in tariff policy is crucial. S.1272 would provide the necessary oversight and ensure that tariff decisions are made with careful consideration and input from Congress. I urge you to support S.1272 and work to restore Congress's rightful role in shaping U.S. trade policy.
