An Open Letter

To: Rep. Scott, Rep. Macri

From: A constituent in Seattle, WA

February 28

I am writing to ask you to support regulating automated license plate readers. The current version of ESSB 6002 does not include sufficient safeguards to protect families across our state from unfair surveillance.

Please strengthen ESSB 6002 by voting for the following three high-priority amendments: 1. Strengthen data retention limits by reducing the 21-day data retention period to as short as possible, and absolutely no more than seven (7) days. 2. Prohibit the disclosure of collected data with private third-party vendors and impose guardrails on vendor access to the ALPR system. 3. Impose a limitation on interjurisdictional data sharing, permitting such sharing only pursuant to a felony warrant. These amendments are necessary to protect immigrants, those seeking reproductive and gender-affirming care, protestors, and working people across Washington state from the Trump administration's overreach and violence. Thank your for support and leadership on this issue.
