In college, I had to select a social issue to write a paper on, and I selected horse slaughter. I love horses, but after researching the issue of horse slaughter, I came to the heartbreaking conclusion that the banning of horse slaughter in the United States did nothing to protect slaughter-bound American horses. In fact, it just made their last days on earth worse, with having to endure transport to Canada and Mexico. In order to close this gap, and achieve the goal that many hoped would be achieved with banning slaughter, we need to prohibit the export of horses for slaughter.
As your constituent, I urge you to support BUILD America 250 Act (H.R. 8870), the surface transportation reauthorization bill. I urge Congress to expeditiously pass a surface transportation package that includes these long-overdue measures to close the gap and protect American horses.
