Oppose Mid-Decade Redistricting in Indiana

To: Gov. Braun

From: A verified voter in Dyer, IN

October 24, 2025

I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed mid-decade redistricting effort in Indiana. As a concerned constituent, I urge you to stand against this unnecessary and potentially harmful attempt to redraw our state's congressional map before the 2026 midterm elections. The current map, drawn in 2021, already gives Republicans a 7-2 advantage in our state's congressional delegation. This proposed redistricting effort appears to be a blatant attempt to further manipulate district lines for partisan gain, rather than addressing any legitimate need for change. It's crucial to note that multiple polls show the majority of Hoosiers oppose early redistricting. This clearly demonstrates that this effort does not align with the will of the people you were elected to represent. Furthermore, the Indiana Black Legislative Caucus has rightly condemned this effort, stating that it would dilute Black voting power. We must protect the voting rights of all Hoosiers, not undermine them for political advantage. I am heartened to see that even within the state GOP caucus, there is division over this issue. This suggests that many of our elected officials recognize the potential harm and lack of justification for this redistricting attempt. The fact that Senate Republicans currently lack the votes to pursue this effort is a clear indication that it does not have broad support, even within the party pushing for it. As your constituent, I ask you to publicly oppose any mid-decade redistricting efforts. Instead, I urge you to focus on addressing the real issues facing Hoosiers, such as education, healthcare, and economic development. Let's work together to strengthen our democracy, not undermine it through unnecessary and divisive redistricting efforts. The next regular legislative session starts in January, with candidate filing for the 2026 primary opening on January 7. This gives us ample time to prepare for the next election cycle without resorting to hasty and potentially harmful redistricting. I implore you to use your influence to ensure that our current district map remains in place until the next scheduled redistricting process. Thank you for your attention to this critical matter. I look forward to hearing your stance on this issue and hope you will stand with the majority of Hoosiers in opposing mid-decade redistricting.
