Protect Apache sacred site Oak Flat from mining
To: Justices Court
From: A constituent in Lansdale, PA
May 28, 2025
The Supreme Court's decision to reject the Native American religious claim regarding the Resolution Copper mine on sacred Apache land in Arizona is deeply concerning. Oak Flat, the site in question, has been a place of worship and spiritual significance for the Apache people for centuries. Allowing this mining project to proceed would effectively destroy a sacred site central to Apache traditions and ceremonies, violating their religious rights and disrespecting their cultural heritage. While the economic benefits of the proposed copper mine are touted, prioritizing profits over the preservation of indigenous sacred lands and the protection of religious freedoms is unacceptable. The intrinsic value of Oak Flat to the Apache community far outweighs any potential economic gains from the mining operation. I urge you to take immediate action to halt the Resolution Copper mining project and protect Oak Flat from desecration. The government has an obligation to uphold the religious rights and cultural traditions of Native American communities. Allowing this mine to proceed would set a dangerous precedent and further erode the already strained relationship between the government and indigenous peoples. The sacred land of Oak Flat must be preserved for future generations of Apache people to practice their ceremonies and maintain their spiritual connection to this site. Economic development should not come at the expense of trampling on the religious freedoms and cultural heritage of marginalized communities. I implore you to stand for the protection of Native American sacred sites and the upholding of their constitutional rights.
