I am writing to express serious concern about the potential invocation of the Insurrection Act by former President Donald Trump around April 20, 2025 — a move that could mark the beginning of a significant and dangerous shift toward authoritarian rule. The warning signs follow a familiar global pattern. Autocracies rarely begin with an outright coup. They evolve step by step: through legal mechanisms, political appointments, and the slow erosion of democratic norms — often justified by crisis. What we’re seeing aligns closely with this trajectory. Phase 1: Justifying Crackdown through Protest If the Insurrection Act is invoked, widespread protests will likely follow. These protests — even if peaceful — may be intentionally provoked to escalate into violence by far-right militias or bad-faith actors. Violence will then be used to justify sweeping crackdowns, painting opponents as domestic terrorists or threats to national security. Phase 2: Expanded Martial Law and Militia Support Under the guise of restoring order, we may see martial law declared in major cities, with National Guard deployments and curfews. Militias like the Proud Boys or Oath Keepers could be mobilized as unofficial enforcers — deputized or encouraged to support law enforcement. This circumvents resistance from military leaders unwilling to follow unconstitutional orders. Phase 3: Arrests and Political Detentions We could then see arrests of political opponents, journalists, and dissenters, framed as necessary under “emergency” conditions. Show trials, loyalty tests, and purges of civil servants and military officers could follow, consolidating power in the hands of loyalists. Phase 4: Media Suppression and Surveillance Independent media may be censored or shut down. Journalists and critics might face intimidation or arrest. Social media platforms could be pressured to suppress dissent. Surveillance tools could be used to monitor citizens and preemptively target opposition — all under a national security justification. Phase 5: Border Closures and Election Suspension Borders may be closed to prevent dissidents from fleeing. Political detention centers — already existing within ICE and private prison infrastructure — could be used to hold opponents without trial. Finally, the 2026 midterms may be postponed or rendered meaningless through gerrymandering and voter suppression. Much of this plan is already outlined in the Project 2025 roadmap. It’s not speculation — it’s strategy. What You Can Do Congress must act now. Publicly oppose any unjustified invocation of the Insurrection Act. Demand oversight of federal and militia coordination. Protect whistleblowers, the press, and election integrity. Once martial law begins, resistance may become impossible within days. We still have time to stop this — but not much.
