I am writing to express my strong opposition to SB 171, the proposed bill that would ban all abortion drugs in Indiana, even in cases of rape, incest, or when the life of the mother is at risk. This draconian measure represents an unconscionable overreach by the government into personal medical decisions that should remain between a woman and her doctor. Abortion pills approved by the FDA provide a safe and effective method for terminating a pregnancy, particularly in the earliest stages. Banning these medications would force women to undergo unnecessary surgical procedures, increasing health risks and limiting access, especially in rural areas. Moreover, criminalizing the possession or prescription of abortion drugs is a violation of medical privacy and could have a chilling effect on doctors' ability to properly care for their patients. No woman should ever be forced to carry a pregnancy resulting from the horrific crimes of rape or incest. And every pregnant person must have the option to terminate if continuing the pregnancy would endanger their life. SB 171's lack of exceptions in these cases is unconscionably cruel. The provision that could charge women with perjury if they inaccurately claim a rape or incest exception is a blatant attempt at intimidation. Ultimately, this bill represents an ideological agenda overriding proven medical science and a woman's constitutionally protected reproductive rights. I urge you to reject SB 171 and any measures that so egregiously undermine personal freedoms and endanger the health and wellbeing of Hoosiers. Women's lives and personal liberty are at stake.
