At this moment, I am asking you both to come together and act to protect healthcare for Alaskans by extending the Affordable Care Act subsidies in the current budget negotiations. Alaska has some of the highest health care costs in the nation. Without ACA subsidies, premiums here are projected to rise by 75% in 2026—far more than in most other states. That means thousands of Alaskans—rural residents, small business owners, fishermen, and families—will lose access to affordable coverage. Many of us simply cannot absorb those increases. For people living in remote areas or working in industries without employer health insurance, ACA plans are not optional—they are essential. This is not about partisanship; it is about protecting the health and economic well-being of the people you represent. The ACA subsidies have kept coverage within reach for Alaskans who otherwise would go without. They have reduced uncompensated care costs for our hospitals and clinics. They have kept small communities healthier and more resilient. I urge you to band together with your colleagues, across party lines, to reopen the government and pass a budget that extends ACA subsidies. Doing so will safeguard affordable healthcare for millions of Americans and for tens of thousands of Alaskans who depend on it most. Alaska needs your leadership now.
