An Open Letter

To: Rep. Kean

From: A constituent in Basking Ridge, NJ

February 16

Dear Representative Kean, I am writing as a deeply concerned New Jersey voter to express my profound disappointment in your decision to support the SAVE Act. I am appalled that time and attention are being spent on legislation that does nothing to strengthen our elections and instead threatens to undermine voter participation across New Jersey and within our own county. However, you can still vote against the MEGA Act when it’s brought to the House for consideration. Your vote in favor of this bill is especially troubling because the SAVE Act would impose new burdens on lawful voters who have long exercised their constitutional right to participate in our democracy. New Jersey voters rely heavily* on mail in ballots, and residents across our communities depend on this method because of work schedules, caregiving responsibilities, mobility limitations, transportation challenges, and other everyday realities. Rather than protecting voters, this bill would make it harder for many of your constituents to cast their ballots. *Per NJ.Gov, at the 2024 General Election, New Jersey voters submitted 4.3 million ballots, with nearly one million cast by mail There is no evidence—anecdotal or otherwise—of a crisis of non citizen voting in the United States. Multiple studies, including those conducted by conservative organizations, consistently show that non citizen voting is virtually nonexistent. Passing legislation that restricts access to the ballot in order to address a problem that does not exist is not responsible governance. It is voter suppression, and it directly harms the people you were elected to represent. Your constituents deserve a representative who defends their right to vote, not one who supports measures that make participation more difficult. I urge you to reconsider your position and to stand firmly with New Jersey voters by opposing any future efforts that restrict access to the ballot. Why don't you and your colleagues stop wasting U.S. tax dollars trying to exaggerate and then combat a problem that barely even exists?  Shame on you! This is all performative nonsense, and you all know it!  These bills aren’t about keeping our elections free and fair. They’re about politicians setting the stage to interfere with election results they don’t like. PLEASE REPRESENT YOUR NJ CONSTITUENTS AND VOTE AGAINST THE MEGA ACT.
