Immigration

To: Sen. McCreery, Rep. Steinmetz, Gov. Kehoe

From: A verified voter in Maryland Heights, MO

January 26

I write to you today with profound concern about a troubling pattern of actions by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and associated federal enforcement officers that have resulted in the deaths of multiple U.S. citizens, most recently in Minneapolis. These incidents raise urgent questions about the use of force, accountability, civilian safety, and the core principles of justice that bind our nation. In the span of less than a month, federal immigration agents have been involved in multiple shootings of U.S. citizens, including the January 7 death of Renée Good and the January 24 killing of 37-year-old intensive care nurse Alex Pretti during operations in Minneapolis. In both cases, conflicting narratives have emerged between official statements and bystander evidence, and significant skepticism surrounds how these events were handled and justified by the agencies involved. These incidents have sparked significant local and national outcry, including protests in cities across the country, demands from state officials for investigations and the removal of federal agents from Minneapolis, and calls from leaders across the political spectrum for full transparency and accountability. As a U.S. citizen, I am alarmed by these developments, and I urge you to take a public stand in the Senate to ensure: 1. Immediate, independent investigations into all recent fatal encounters involving ICE or Border Patrol agents to determine whether excessive force was used and whether proper protocols and federal law were followed. 2. Strict oversight of ICE and DHS operations, including clear requirements for body cameras, transparent reporting, and accountability mechanisms that go beyond internal review. 3. Protection of constitutional rights for all Americans, including the right to safely observe or protest government actions without fear of lethal force. 4. A comprehensive review of federal immigration enforcement policy that re-evaluates the deployment of ICE and Border Patrol officers in domestic settings, especially where civilian safety is at stake. It is not a partisan question to insist that federal agencies be held accountable and that the rights and lives of U.S. citizens and residents be protected. As lawmakers entrusted with oversight and the safeguarding of civil liberties, you have a duty to lead on this issue, demand transparency, and push for reforms that prevent further loss of life. Thank you for your consideration of these concerns. I respectfully request a response outlining your position on these matters and the steps you intend to support in the Senate.
