Congress must act to defund the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and halt Elon Musk's unilateral dismantling of federal agencies and government websites. DOGE has exploited funding loopholes and insufficient oversight to wield unchecked power in bypassing legal processes. Its primary funding sources are the Information Technology Oversight and Reform (ITOR) account ($75 million in unobligated funds), ITOR funds from the American Rescue Plan ($200 million through 2024), and Economy Act transfers from other agencies ($39 million so far). By rescinding these unobligated funds and prohibiting their use for DOGE activities, Congress can rein in DOGE's overreach and unconstitutional actions. This crisis will only escalate if Congress fails to reach an appropriations deal, allowing DOGE to operate unimpeded while furloughing other federal workers. Restoring the separation of powers is crucial to prevent further harm to government operations and public trust. Exercising its Constitutional authority over appropriations is Congress's best path to deleting DOGE.
