An Open Letter

To: Rep. Parshley, Gov. Ferguson, Rep. Doglio, Sen. Bateman

From: A constituent in Olympia, WA

February 28

I’m writing as a constituent and technologist deeply concerned about the direction of AI policy in relation to defense and surveillance. I respectfully urge you to voice support for Anthropic’s principled response to the U.S. Department of Defense and to stand behind their ethical stance on responsible AI development . We need clear and enforceable limits on the use of autonomous weapons and government surveillance systems powered by AI. These technologies carry profound moral and societal implications that demand oversight rooted in human judgment, transparency, and accountability, and all such values that reflect the best of our democracy. At the same time, we must preserve the freedom of AI innovators to build and experiment within the bounds of law and ethics. America’s leadership in AI innovation depends on safeguarding both public trust and creative independence. Your support for Anthropic’s stance would send a powerful message that you value ethics, accountability, and innovation in equal measure in US AI leadership. Thank you.
