Reject legislation compromising judicial independence and rule of law

To: Sen. Brammer, Gov. Cox, Rep. Hawkins

From: A constituent in American Fork, UT

March 1

The proposed legislation to establish a legislative committee to evaluate judges up for retention and make recommendations on the ballot is a concerning overreach that threatens judicial independence. Allowing partisan politics to encroach on the judicial process undermines impartiality and erodes public trust in our courts. Judges must be able to make decisions based solely on the law, not political considerations or fear of retaliation. An independent judiciary free from external pressures is essential to upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights of all citizens. This bill represents an unprecedented intrusion into the electoral process that could incentivize judges to rule in politically motivated ways rather than adhering strictly to the law and Constitution. Preserving the separation of powers and checks and balances is vital to our democratic system of government. I urge you to reject this misguided legislation and any other attempts to compromise judicial independence.
