Prioritize sustainable transit solutions over ineffective highway expansion

The relentless push for highway expansion has proven ineffective at alleviating congestion and undermines our goals of reducing emissions and building sustainable transportation options. Decades of research demonstrate that widening roads only provides temporary relief before induced demand erases any perceived benefits. Instead of squandering public funds on stopgap measures, we should prioritize long-term solutions that promote accessibility, equity, and environmental responsibility. A comprehensive regional mass transit system is crucial, including extending MAX lines, establishing commuter rail networks connecting cities like Portland, Salem, and Eugene, and carving dedicated lanes for efficient bus rapid transit. Additionally, an integrated multi-modal approach with robust bicycle infrastructure and pedestrian-friendly streetscapes can significantly reduce car dependency and alleviate traffic while promoting active lifestyles. Rather than perpetuating costly and ineffective highway expansion projects, our limited resources should be invested in visionary transit initiatives that uplift communities, safeguard our environment, and cultivate sustainable growth for generations to come. The time to prioritize innovative, equitable, and climate-conscious solutions is now.
