Pass simple AI public profit sharing regulations NOW!

To: Rep. Nosse, Gov. Kotek, Sen. Taylor

From: A constituent in Portland, OR

September 24

Regarding AI regulation, we need something simple: AI public profit sharing. If regular people don't see the benefits of their freely given data aggregation , freely given data manipulation, freely given data to sell to corporations for private benefit, then the public will lose in every facet of the economy. Draft simple legislation that forces every AI company, every data center, every big data conglomerate operating in Oregon to be subject to a minimum surcharge of anywhere from 10-20% of profits, to go back into public coffers. We need to regulate this industry as if it's a public utility, or like a public entity. Without deep, public control of these entities, they will run amok. We cannot allow the wealth of this industry to pillage everyday families and businesses, who may inevitably lose if this technology becomes more powerful than we can predict today. We don't know how powerful these companies and their technology will become. It's incumbent upon Oregon to become a global leader in AI regulation so that we can fairly distribute the gains. We know this industry will do anything in its power to manipulate the narrative, steal from the public (IPOs, go into the public market place) and accumulate wealth without showing how they intend to protect jobs and future generations. We need to ACT NOW to avoid absolute economic catastrophe from befalling our nation. If we do this right, we could become a model for how to properly apply guardrails to an industry that current has NONE and that is begging for oversight. Place them in a stranglehold. If we cannot make them serve the public, then we need to be firm that they do not belong in our state otherwise. Our tech industry will support their supply chain regardless. We need AI companies to know we mean business and that we will not accept anything less than billions from them. While we're at it, consider drafting a fund that specifically targets job sectors that will be lost to AI. Put money aside that will be used specifically for job retraining, UBI, or other support systems in place once the inevitabilities of this technology become realized. We don't know the externalities, but we can plan for them. Make smart choices. This isn't hard, it just takes some courage. We're counting on you to protect us from the unknown. If you do nothing, you will have failed us. Do something, for the love of God.
