The decision to terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Afghanistan is deeply concerning and fails to recognize the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the country. Despite claims of improved security conditions, reports from the United Nations and the U.S. State Department paint a troubling picture of escalating violence, widespread human rights abuses, and worsening food insecurity affecting millions of Afghans. Forcibly returning individuals to such dire circumstances would be inhumane and would undermine America's moral standing. Those who assisted U.S. efforts in Afghanistan took grave risks and were promised protection – terminating TPS represents a betrayal of that commitment. Rather than revoking this vital lifeline, the administration should extend and redesignate TPS for Afghanistan to uphold its humanitarian obligations and preserve the integrity of the U.S. immigration system.
