One Nation, Two Terms — Defend the Constitution Before It’s Tested Again

To: Dir. Pate

From: A constituent in Des Moines, IA

October 28

I am writing as a concerned citizen who believes constitutional limits must be honored without exception. Former President Donald Trump has publicly said he would “love” to run for a third term, and his close allies have spoken openly of plans for him to do so in 2028. These statements test the boundaries of the Constitution—and the resolve of those charged with defending it. The Twenty-Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is unambiguous: “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.” As your office serves as the chief election authority responsible for certifying candidates and ensuring ballot eligibility, this obligation extends to rejecting any filing that would violate that constitutional term limit. I respectfully request that you issue a public statement by December 15, 2025, affirming that [State Name] will not certify or accept any presidential candidate who has already been elected to two terms. I also ask that you provide a written response to this letter confirming your office’s position. Our democracy relies on public servants who uphold the Constitution even when doing so is politically inconvenient. I trust you will reaffirm your commitment to that duty by making this position clear to the people of this state.
