Support Democratic DHS Funding Demands or Defund the Department Entirely
To: Sen. Lee, Sen. Curtis
From: A constituent in Salt Lake City, UT
February 18
I am writing as your constituent to state my position clearly: you must support every Democratic demand regarding Department of Homeland Security funding, or I expect you to vote against any DHS funding bill that comes before the Senate.
The current impasse over DHS funding exists because legitimate concerns about the department's operations and accountability have not been addressed. Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, the top Democrat in the House, has outlined specific conditions that must be met before DHS receives additional taxpayer dollars. I support those demands completely and without reservation.
I understand you may not share my views on this issue, and I recognize that you have consistently voted differently than I would prefer. However, I am still your constituent, and I am asking you to represent my position on this critical matter. The Department of Homeland Security should not receive funding unless it meets the standards Democrats have established. If Republicans refuse to negotiate in good faith on these conditions, then DHS should remain unfunded.
This is not a position I take lightly. I am fully aware that a prolonged shutdown affects DHS employees and operations. However, the principle at stake is more important than short-term disruption. Government agencies must be held accountable, and funding should never be automatic. The concerns raised by Democratic leadership are serious and deserve more than dismissal or token gestures.
I am asking you to do one of two things: either support the Democratic demands in their entirety, or vote no on any DHS funding bill that does not meet those conditions. There is no middle ground on this issue for me. If the department cannot operate with proper accountability and reform, it should not operate at all.
I expect a response explaining your position on this matter and how you intend to vote on DHS funding.
