I strongly support SB 5855. This bill prohibits local, state, and federal law enforcement officers from wearing masks while interacting with the public and allows a person detained by an unlawfully masked local, state, or federal officer to sue that officer in their official capacity. Making sure officers are identifiable enhances public safety and community trust. Prohibiting masks addresses the risk of people impersonating law enforcement officers. Masks evoke fear and trauma and harken back to the era of the Ku Klux Klan. This is especially traumatic to people of color. Please ensure this bill gets a floor vote and vote in favor of passage.
