I read your recent message celebrating National Small Business Week and claiming to stand up for Main Street by fighting “overregulation” and promoting a “pro-business environment.” As a Minnesotan and someone who understands the reality on the ground for small businesses, I find your statement deeply disingenuous. You say you're defending small businesses, yet you continue to support Donald Trump's proposed tariffs—which are the very opposite of pro-business policy for the small entrepreneurs you claim to champion. These tariffs are a hidden tax that disproportionately affects small businesses, especially those that rely on imported parts, materials, or inventory to survive. Unlike large corporations, small businesses don’t have the resources to absorb sudden cost increases or hire teams of lobbyists to cut special deals with Trump’s administration. Many won’t even get a hearing—let alone an exemption. Trump’s own words make it clear: these tariffs aren’t designed to help the American economy—they’re meant to punish and pressure. And once again, it’s small businesses, workers, and consumers who will pay the price. If you truly cared about Main Street, you would be pushing back on these damaging tariffs, not cheerleading them. You would be standing up for actual local businesses in Southern Minnesota—the manufacturers, ag suppliers, repair shops, and retailers who are already struggling with inflation and supply chain issues. Instead, you’re giving cover to a plan that helps billionaires consolidate more power while small operators get squeezed out. It’s not too late to change course. If you truly believe in the American Dream and want to help small businesses thrive, I urge you to stop supporting policies that do them harm. Publicly oppose these tariffs. Push for fair trade and predictable pricing. Don’t let your legacy be one of complicity in their downfall.
