I am writing as a deeply concerned constituent, woman, and citizen who believes that every American’s right to vote must be zealously protected—not quietly undermined. I urge you to oppose the so-called SAVE Act, a dangerous piece of legislation that would effectively disenfranchise millions of Americans, particularly married women. This bill, under the guise of election integrity, proposes requiring documentary proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections. While that may sound reasonable on its face, the reality is far more insidious: millions of married women who legally changed their last names may not have readily available access to the exact documentation needed under the Act’s requirements. Passports and birth certificates often don’t reflect married names. Some women lack original marriage certificates or face costly, bureaucratic hurdles to get updated documents. And for what? To fix a problem—noncitizen voting—that statistically does not exist. This is voter suppression in disguise. The SAVE Act is not about protecting our democracy; it’s about excluding people from it. Women—especially those who have taken their spouse’s name—are collateral damage in a politically motivated effort to reduce voter turnout and tilt electoral outcomes. It is both offensive and unconstitutional. Our democracy is strongest when every eligible voter can participate. That means ensuring that voting is accessible, not blocked by needless red tape and paperwork. I urge you to reject the SAVE Act in the strongest possible terms and to speak out loudly and publicly against it. This moment calls for courage. Please be on the right side of history.
