End ICE Overreach in North Carolina and Support Humane Immigration Reform
To: Gov. Stein, Sen. Burgin, Rep. Penny
From: A constituent in Lillington, NC
July 31
North Carolina is home to vibrant immigrant communities who are integral to our economy, culture, and shared future. Yet aggressive ICE enforcement continues to harm families across the state. Raids and detentions disrupt workplaces, schools, and neighborhoods—often targeting long-standing residents with deep community ties and no criminal history.
These actions erode public trust and cause lasting trauma. In rural and urban communities alike, people are afraid to go to work, seek medical care, or report crimes. That’s not the North Carolina I believe in.
There must be greater oversight of ICE operations in our state, including a reevaluation of local law enforcement cooperation agreements that lead to unjust detentions. We should end the use of private detention facilities, many of which have documented histories of abuse and neglect. Our tax dollars should not fund cruelty.
North Carolina immigrants include farmworkers, teachers, health aides, small business owners, and students. Many are DACA recipients or have lived here most of their lives. They deserve a pathway to citizenship—not fear, detention, or deportation.
I urge you to support legislation that limits ICE overreach, invests in community-based alternatives to detention, and creates fair immigration pathways. Policies rooted in due process, dignity, and safety reflect the values most North Carolinians hold dear. It’s time to move beyond enforcement-only approaches and build an immigration system that honors the contributions of all our neighbors.
