Hands off public lands
To: Sen. Crapo
From: A constituent in Boise, ID
June 30
I am writing to express my strong opposition to the provision included in the recent House-passed spending bill that proposes the sale of millions of acres of America’s public lands. This proposal poses a serious threat to Idaho’s wild and open spaces, as well as to our economy, culture, and identity. Idaho is one of the most public-land-rich states in the nation, with over 60% of our land base held in public trust. These lands are not a burden — they are a gift and a competitive advantage. Idaho’s public lands support a thriving outdoor recreation economy that contributes $7.8 billion annually, supports nearly 78,000 jobs, and generates $500 million in state and local tax revenue. From hunting and fishing to hiking, rafting, and wildlife viewing, these lands provide invaluable recreational opportunities that enhance our quality of life and attract millions of visitors to our state each year. The proposed sale of public lands — without public input, environmental review, or proper accountability — is deeply troubling. Such actions would undermine the democratic principles of transparency and stewardship that Idahoans value. Public lands are part of the American promise — a legacy of shared ownership and access that once lost, cannot be restored. The environmental consequences of these sales would be equally devastating, leading to fragmented wildlife habitat, reduced ecosystem resilience, and loss of biodiversity that sustains both our natural heritage and our tourism economy. Selling off public lands in secret, with no accountability, is not only irresponsible, it is un-American. Idahoans cherish our public lands, and we believe in protecting what makes our state special for future generations — not auctioning it off to the highest bidder. I respectfully urge you to reject any and all proposals that would privatize or sell off Idaho’s public lands. Our economy, wildlife, way of life, and future depend on keeping these lands in public hands. Thank you for your time and consideration.
