I'm writing to you in protest with regards to the actions of ICE and CBP in Portland and statewide.
I'm the daughter of an immigrant and I'm deeply frightened by the idea that my 86 year old mother could be subjected to the degrading, humiliating, and dangerous actions of ICE and CBP despite her naturalization in 2008.
I urge you to act to affirm the civil and human rights of Oregonians regardless of immigration status, and pursue legal action and legislation that constrains ICE and CBP actions in Oregon.
We should be deeply concerned about the interstate removal of detained Oregonians regardless of US immigration status, the detention of minor children and their caretakers, and lack of transparency in regards to conditions these detainees are subjected to.
We should also be concerned about the lack of accountability that is afforded to these agencies by allowing their agents to obscure their identities.
I'm sure you realize that if ICE's actions were taking place in a war zone, many of them would constitute war crimes under the Geneva treaties - the use of chemical weapons, collective punishment, lack of accountability, and flagrant violations of basic human rights are especially appalling for an agency enforcing the equivalent of a jaywalking ticket.
