An Open Letter

To: Gov. Moore

From: A constituent in North Beach, MD

August 17

Governor Moore, I am writing as a proud Marylander to thank you for standing firm against President Trump’s attempt to misuse the National Guard as a political weapon. Your refusal to federalize Maryland’s Guard, and your clear words that this deployment is “deeply dangerous,” reflect the leadership our state and our country need in this moment. What is happening in Los Angeles, Washington D.C., and now here in Maryland is nothing short of an authoritarian playbook: starve states of resources, delegitimize local leaders, and then justify federal intrusion under the guise of “crime suppression.” Maryland is the next target in this growing wildfire, and your resistance is critical to holding the line. I urge you to continue to: • Refuse to authorize the Maryland Guard for policing missions that violate their purpose and training. • Speak out nationally about the dangers of domestic militarization and the misuse of federal power. • Support Maryland communities under pressure by defending schools, local governments, and disaster relief funding from federal retaliation. • Mobilize with state legislators to protect local elections, school boards, and councils — the first line of defense against authoritarian overreach. Please know that you have the support of Maryland residents who will continue to call, write, and stand with you. We are contacting our state and federal representatives, joining with unions, faith groups, and civil rights organizations, and registering voters to ensure our state remains a beacon of democracy. Governor Moore, thank you for showing courage when it matters most. Stay strong — Maryland stands with you.
