Reconsider Overly Broad "Terrorist" Definition in Bill
To: Sen. Booker, Sen. Kim
From: A constituent in Raritan, NJ
December 19
I urge reconsideration of this bill due to concerns over its overly broad definition of "terrorist supporting organizations." The language could potentially be misused to target legitimate organizations that simply voice dissent or criticism against government policies. While I understand the intent to disrupt funding for violent extremist groups, the current wording leaves too much room for interpretation that could infringe on constitutionally protected free speech and association rights. Rather than rush this flawed legislation, I recommend a more carefully constructed approach that protects civil liberties while still allowing crackdowns on groups directly involved in terrorist activities and financing. National security and democratic values need not be pitted against each other with proper prudence and precision in the statutory language.
