Reject HB 197 (school materials amendments)

To: Rep. Owens

From: A constituent in Herriman, UT

January 25

I’m concerned about HB 197 (School Materials Amendments). Some of the new language, particularly mandates that school libraries prioritize academic books over fiction, and the use of AI to flag books based on a list of keywords, will harm our children. Fiction is important and children should have access to it. School librarians are very good at curating for their age groups. The amendments feel like government control over education. I can’t help but suspect the keywords most fully align with only one “acceptable” moral perspective.
