Keep Denali’s Name—Alternative Recognition for McKinley

To: Sen. Murkowski, Sen. Sullivan

From: A constituent in Anchorage, AK

January 30

I am writing to express my strong support for keeping North America’s highest peak named Denali. This name, deeply rooted in Alaska’s Indigenous heritage, rightfully reflects the cultural and historical significance of the mountain to the Koyukon Athabaskan people and Alaskans as a whole. While I recognize that President William McKinley has historical significance, he is already honored with the McKinley River. If additional recognition is necessary, I propose renaming Denali National Park as McKinley National Park while keeping the mountain’s name Denali. This compromise would honor McKinley without erasing the mountain’s rightful name and cultural legacy. I urge you to stand with Alaskans and Indigenous communities in preserving Denali’s name. Thank you for your time and consideration.
