State Action Needed on Data Brokers and Surveillance Expansion
To: Gov. Braun
From: A verified voter in Guilford, IN
January 17
Dear Governor Braun,
Indiana lacks meaningful protections against the exploitation of personal data by data brokers who buy, sell, and aggregate sensitive location, health, financial, and behavioral information without genuine consent.
At the same time, state agencies increasingly rely on data-driven and AI-enabled systems that expand surveillance while offering residents little transparency or recourse. As Governor, you can support opt-in data standards, restrict the sale of sensitive data, and impose limits on state procurement and use of surveillance technologies.
Privacy is not a partisan issue—it is a condition of personal freedom and democratic participation. Indiana should not lag behind other states in protecting its residents.
