Start acting like this is the emergency it is!
To: Rep. Lieu
From: A constituent in Los Angeles, CA
January 15
I am writing again because things are getting worse, not better.
I watched a member of Congress talk about “day one plans” to hold people like Stephen Miller accountable for what is happening right now. That language honestly scares me. Day one of what?
Day one after midterms that may never happen? Day one after three more years of this administration, assuming elections still matter? Day one after people’s lives have already been destroyed?
Day one was two weeks ago.
That was when masked federal agents started grabbing people. That was when federal force was dropped into cities as a show of power. That was when it became clear this wasn’t about public safety anymore.
I am the child of Holocaust survivors. I don’t say that for drama. I say it because I grew up hearing what happens when leaders keep saying “later.” Later is how abuse becomes normal. Later is how lines disappear.
I don’t want to hear about plans for a future administration that may never exist. I want to know what you are doing now, while this is happening.
Where is the emergency oversight? Where are the subpoenas? Where are the funding blocks? Where is the urgency?
Please stop talking about day one like it’s some clean reset down the road. People are being harmed today. Precedents are being set today.
Act like this is the emergency it is. Waiting feels dangerously familiar.
