Urgent Constituent Concern Regarding Greenland, NATO, and Executive Overreach
To: Rep. Culp, Sen. Charbonneau
From: A constituent in Monticello, IN
January 17
I am writing as a deeply concerned constituent to urge you to exercise your constitutional responsibility to check executive overreach, particularly regarding recent statements and actions involving Greenland and the use of tariffs to coerce allied nations. The President’s repeated assertions that the United States should acquire Greenland despite clear and unequivocal rejection by Greenland’s people and the government of Denmark are alarming. Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, a NATO ally. Any attempt to threaten, coerce, or use force against an allied nation would represent an unprecedented breach of international law and would fundamentally undermine NATO itself. This is not rhetoric that can be dismissed lightly, it carries real diplomatic and security consequences. Equally troubling is the President’s apparent willingness to impose broad tariffs on allied countries as a means of strong-arming them into political compliance. Tariffs are not paid by foreign governments. They are paid by American consumers and businesses. Using them as a coercive political weapon against allies risks economic harm at home while damaging relationships that are central to U.S. security and global stability. These actions reflect a pattern of governance that disregards: - Congressional authority over war and trade - Long-standing alliances and treaty obligations - The economic well-being of American households - The constitutional balance of power Congress is not a bystander in these matters. The Constitution explicitly grants Congress authority over war, trade, and oversight of the executive branch. When a president threatens allies, undermines NATO, or uses economic punishment as leverage without congressional consent, it is Congress’s duty to respond. I expect you, as my elected representative, to: - Publicly oppose any attempt to threaten or coerce NATO allies, including Denmark - Assert Congress’s authority over tariffs and trade policy - Reinforce clear limits on unilateral executive action - Defend constitutional checks and balances regardless of party This is not a partisan concern. It is a matter of constitutional governance, alliance integrity, and economic responsibility. I am asking you to represent me and many others by acting decisively to rein in these dangerous and destabilizing abuses of power. I would appreciate a response outlining your position and the steps you are taking to address these concerns.
