Reinstate inspectors general, uphold oversight and accountability
To: Sen. Budd, Rep. Moore, Sen. Tillis
From: A constituent in Huntersville, NC
February 1
The mass firings of inspectors general by the president is a blatant violation of the law and democratic norms. As public watchdogs, inspectors general play a crucial role in uncovering fraud, waste, and abuse within government agencies, upholding transparency and accountability. The requirement for the president to provide Congress with 30 days' notice and a substantive rationale before removing inspectors general was specifically intended to safeguard their independence from political interference. By circumventing this process, the president has undermined the system of checks and balances and dealt a severe blow to government oversight. Inspectors general like Phyllis Fong, who refused to comply with her unlawful termination, demonstrated admirable courage in standing up for the rule of law. Their dismissals represent an abuse of power that cannot be tolerated. I urge you to take immediate action to reinstate the inspectors general who were wrongfully terminated. Their reinstatement is essential to restore integrity, independence, and public trust in the federal government's ability to function effectively and serve the best interests of the American people. Upholding the authority and autonomy of inspectors general is a matter of utmost importance for the health of our democracy.
