Congressman Pete Stauber has introduced a dangerous bill, HR 978, that could permanently pollute the Boundary Waters in northern Minnesota. I am asking the Congressperson to oppose this bill.
HR 978 would strip protection from hundreds of thousands of acres of protected land surrounding the Boundary Waters and open it to toxic copper-sulfide mining. In addition, it would curb any kind of meaningful environmental review and give the Chilean-mining giant Antofagasta leases to mine.
This bill gives away our public land to a foreign mining conglomerate and their billionaire owners. It prioritizes the profits of a Chilean mining conglomerate over the will of the majority of Minnesotans and those like myself who have canoed and camped extensively in the Boundary Waters Wilderness Area. It is a national treasure unlike anything else in this country. HR 978 puts pollution and profit ahead of clean water.
Please oppose HR 978 or any similar bills that may be introduced that threaten to irreparably harm the Boundary Waters Wilderness Area and its adjacent public lands.
