Veto House Bill 96
To: Gov. DeWine
From: A constituent in Columbus, OH
June 27
Protecting free and open access to information is essential for a well-informed society. House Bill 96 raises significant legal concerns about censorship and discrimination. It limits families' freedom to make their own choices about what materials are appropriate. It imposes expensive unfunded mandates on public libraries that will divert resources away from critical services. Furthermore, the vague language makes fair and consistent application extremely difficult. Rather than segregating certain books and materials, public libraries should maintain their role as welcoming community spaces that foster learning, exploration, and personal growth for all. Existing tools like parental controls already empower families to make informed choices aligning with their values. I urge you to veto the provision in House Bill 96 that requires moving materials related to sexual orientation and gender identity away from areas visible to minors. Protecting intellectual freedom and ensuring equitable access to information and ideas should be priorities. Vetoing this harmful policy preserves local decision-making, professional library expertise, and precious taxpayer resources. Public libraries must remain open and inclusive environments.
