Oppose the Head Start Regulatory Overhaul

To: Rep. Maloy, Sen. Lee, Sen. Curtis

From: A constituent in Salt Lake City, UT

August 7

Block the Trump administration's proposed gutting of Head Start's quality standards. Replacing 122 pages of carefully developed performance standards with a dozen pages of vague guidelines isn't reform — it's dismantlement. Staff-to-student ratios, dental and vision screenings, developmental monitoring, protections against suspending kids with disabilities: all of it gone, left to whatever patchwork of state and local laws happens to exist. Head Start serves more than half a million low-income babies, toddlers, and preschoolers. It works. Khari Garvin, who ran the Office of Head Start under President Biden, put it plainly: "We'd have the carcass of Head Start." The proposal would also require more documentation from homeless and unemployed parents — the exact families this program exists to serve. This country should be investing more in children living in poverty, not stripping away the standards that make their early education meaningful.
