Veto SB1237 and Protect Nonpartisan Election Administration
To: Gov. Hobbs
From: A verified voter in Tucson, AZ
April 13
I'm asking you to veto SB1237. This bill would force the secretary of state to consult with county recorders and legislative elections committee chairs before creating Arizona's election procedures manual, injecting partisan politics into what should be a nonpartisan administrative process.
The current system works. The manual is already subject to approval by both the governor and attorney general, providing necessary oversight. SB1237 is a transparent attempt by Republicans to gain influence over election procedures after losing two years of lawsuits trying to impose their views on the manual. Sponsored by John Kavanagh, this bill is nothing more than sour grapes over Arizona voters electing Democrats to statewide offices.
Election administration must remain independent from legislative interference. Giving legislative committee chairs veto power over the procedures manual would turn election rules into a political football, changing with every shift in legislative control. County elections officials need clear, consistent guidance, not procedures shaped by whichever party controls the legislature. Arizona voters deserve better than this power grab disguised as reform.
