I’m writing as your constituent to urge you to support HB 2481, a crucial bill that protects Washington consumers from invasive surveillance and AI-driven pricing schemes in our grocery stores. Washington has a rare opportunity to lead the nation by banning surge pricing and shopper surveillance—technologies that quietly extract more money from families while tracking our every move. These “smart retail” systems can adjust prices based on personal data or real-time conditions, effectively charging people different amounts for the same goods. That’s not innovation—it’s exploitation. I’m encouraged by the leadership of Representative Mary Fosse and our House Democrats, who have advanced this bill despite intense pushback from grocery and tech industry lobbyists. These corporations are fighting to keep tools in place that increase profits at the expense of everyday Washingtonians. Please stand with consumers, not corporations, by voting yes on HB 2481 and ensuring that families in Washington aren’t forced to trade privacy for fair prices. We deserve transparent, equitable, and respectful shopping experiences—not constant monitoring and manipulation by algorithms. Thank you for protecting the people of Washington from the next wave of AI-powered corporate overreach.
