An Open Letter
To: Rep. Harris
From: A verified voter in Waxhaw, NC
June 10
As your constituent, I am writing to urge you to support H.R. 1106, the Scientific Integrity Act, by taking steps to move it out of committee and bringing it to a floor vote. This bill would help ensure that federal agencies rely on independent science in decision-making and protect scientists from inappropriate political interference. H.R. 1106 would also require agencies to maintain scientific integrity policies and strengthen protections for the people who conduct and use federal science.
This bill is especially important now because the proposed OMB rule would give senior political appointees a more direct role in grant decisions, while treating peer review as advisory rather than decisive. That shift would weaken the merit-based process that has long helped ensure federal research funding goes to the strongest ideas, not the most politically convenient ones. H.R. 1106 is a needed counterbalance because it reinforces the principle that science should guide policy and that federal research should be protected from political influence.
Protecting scientific integrity is not a partisan issue; it is a good-government issue. When science is distorted or suppressed, the consequences can affect public health, environmental safety, education, and the quality of information used to guide policy. Federal agencies, researchers, and the public all benefit when decisions are based on evidence, transparency, and professional review rather than political pressure.
I respectfully ask you to support the prompt release of H.R. 1106 from committee and advocate for a floor vote. Thank you for your service and for considering the concerns of those you represent.
