Protect First Amendment: Review HR 59's church-state implications

To: Rep. Raskin, Sen. Van Hollen, Sen. Alsobrooks

From: A constituent in Silver Spring, MD

January 25, 2025

The First Amendment of the United States Constitution prohibits the government from making laws respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. HR 59 appears to be encroaching on this fundamental freedom by improperly intertwining government and religion. This threatens the secular nature of our democracy and the religious liberties it was designed to protect. As a concerned citizen, I urge you to carefully review HR 59 to ensure it does not erode the vital principle of separation of church and state that has served our nation so well. Preserving this constitutional boundary is essential for maintaining a pluralistic society where all are free to believe or not believe as they choose.
