Request for Oversight: Big Tech, Political Speech, and Election Accountability

To: Rep. Subramanyam

From: A constituent in Lovettsville, VA

November 8

I am writing because I believe an issue involving Big Tech, political speech, and public accountability deserves greater scrutiny. On October 17, Meta temporarily shut down the No Kings Coalition's Instagram account during its nationwide day of action and early-voting mobilization. Organizers lost public access to their account during the event and remained locked out for hours. Meta offered conflicting explanations before apologizing for the erroneous suspension. Then, on October 27, Instagram suspended a Spanish-language voter outreach account belonging to Florida Democratic Senate candidate Angie Nixon while her campaign was posting from a get-out-the-vote rally. Meta later acknowledged that its systems had mistakenly flagged the account as impersonating the campaign. I recognize that Meta has attributed these incidents to technical and automated enforcement errors. But when those errors repeatedly affect political organizing and voter outreach at critical moments, the public deserves answers. I am also concerned about the appearance of potential conflicts of interest when elected officials' immediate family members hold influential positions within major technology companies. Senator Chuck Schumer's daughter Jessica works in policy and partnerships at OpenAI, while his daughter Alison has documented professional ties to Meta. I am not alleging that these relationships influenced any platform decisions. I am asking that transparency and appropriate safeguards be taken seriously. Given your work on the House Oversight Committee and technology issues, would you consider pursuing questions about Meta's content moderation practices, political account restrictions, transparency, and safeguards against political favoritism? Political speech and access to voter information should never be left vulnerable to unexplained platform decisions. Thank you for your continued willingness to listen and engage.
