An Open Letter
To: Rep. Baumgartner
From: A constituent in Spokane, WA
February 4, 2025
Dear congressperson,
I am writing you as 1) An American who has worked tirelessly to do the right thing. As such, I cannot sit back and watch an administration do everything in their power to dismantle our democracy and undermine the hard working Americans (like myself) that you represent. There are many unsettling things that have gone on within the last week that we cannot simply turn a blind eye to. This is not “business as usual,” and we (your constituents) are relying on you to stand up to those who have a blatant disregard for the constitution and have no respect for the American people.
I am writing you as 2) A woman who can simply not understand why my bodily autonomy is at risk in this day and age. The impacts of a federal abortion and contraceptive ban will be far reaching in this country and I cannot imagine the bleak outcome of such a draconian ruling. Stand up and protect not only the women in your life, but the healthcare providers who have dedicated their own lives to providing healthcare for women. For the amount of blood, sweat and tears women have put into this country, we should be owed the right to make decisions for our own bodies.
I have always been proud to be American, but I am scared. I am scared that my rights will be taken away. I am scared of the increased costs of living and being one health crisis away from losing all I have worked for. I am scared that there will be no safety nets for me and my family should the worst happen.
The American public is paralyzed. Those of us who are following what is going on feel helpless, while many have no awareness at all. I ask that you stand up and protect the American people. None of us (Democrat or Republican) deserve what is to come if the current administration is not challenged.
